Jana met us at the airport curb as promised. She made a big cardboard sign with our names on it, so she was easy to spot. It took us a few minutes to get everything loaded in her rig. It was rather like doing a jog saw puzzle. Once we got loaded, we were off to Kasilof, our designated base.
We had an uneventful drive, with both Ken and Sarah fighting to stay awake. Sarah lost the battle on a couple of occasions! It started raining about halfway to Kasilof, though it was mostly a drizzle.
It took about 3 1/2 hours to get to Kasilof. Once we arrived we had to make contact with Cliff's daughter to get keys to the house and truck. Now, don't be mislead by the term house. In this case, the house is a rectangular building that looks a bit like a shed. It's about 650 square feet on the inside, divided into two rooms. The largest room contains the kitchen area, a wood stove, and a living area. The other room is the bedroom. It took us a bit to get the power turned on because it had to be turned on at the main house, which we didn't figure out immediately. Once we did, we got the mini fridge plugged in, figured out the microwave, and Ken built a fire in the wood stove.
You may have noticed a glaring absence in the description of the house. There is no bathroom. There is a room that appears as though it will be a bathroom someday, but right now all it has is a shower stall full of fishing gear. That's ok though, as there is no running water either. The bathroom is a hike down the path to a lovely green outhouse painted with wildflowers. Water can be had via a hose and a container, though the folks in the main house tell it's not fit to drink. We found a water container with water in the house already, put some in the water kettle, and boiled it for two minutes just in case it had cooties. Ken had plenty of food in his cooler, plus some cider and tea mix, so we had a hot meal. Sarah. Also found the location of the 24-hour laundromat that also has showers. That's going to be really important!
The only real low point of the day is that none of the stuff Ken shipped up 10 days ago has arrived yet. Garrett is going to find the tracking numbers at home and look them up to see where they are. So, we have no fishing poles and only a couple of gold pans, though we do have the metal detector. The high banker, the sluice, and the poles are still in transit somewhere. Hopefully they will show up on Monday.
That's all for today!

Just a happy update. The gear is waiting for us at the post office. We can pick it up first thing Monday morning.
ReplyDeleteLook at the bright side. Since there should be about 20 hours of daylight, so you should be able to hold it for the other four and you won't have to worry about doing the privy trek in the dark when something really scary could sneak up on you like a moose or a grizzly, or Sarah Palin.
